「戦車場跡」

経済という現実に立ち向かう度に、少年の心は失われ白髪が増えるのです。そんな塵労に疲れた眼が虚空をさ迷う時、浮かんで来るのは夏草に覆われた「戦車場跡」の光景です。

“The Site of a Field of Tanks”

Everytime when I confront a reality of economy, my boy’s heart is deprived and gray hair is increased. When my eyes are wandering with such a exhaustion, a scene of “The Site of a Field of Tanks” which was covered with summer grass ocurts to my mind.

「終わりの始まりの夏」

生活の変わり目は春が多いようですが、こと恋愛については夏に始まったり終わったりする事が多いように思われます。古今東西、歌にも歌われてきましたよね。僕の年齢になるとまぁそんな事がすっかり無くなるのですが、夏くらいはゴーギャンにでもなった気分でこんな絵を描いてみました。

A change of life is normally in spring, but it seems love begins or ends in summer. In all ages and countries, it was written in poems and songs. These things have never been happened in my age, but it is summer and I painted this picture in a feeling to be Paul Gauguin.

「蕗の傘」

小学校に入学したばかりのころです。給食時間から降り始めた雨が下校時には本降りとなりました。下駄箱の周りには大勢の出迎えの父兄が、傘や長靴や雨合羽を持って蝟集しておりました。僕の母は仕事の手が離せず、随分時が経ってから小さな傘を手に小走りに学校へ向かう途中、蕗の傘を差して下校する僕と出会ったそうです。「この子はたとい自分が早世しても、ひとりで生きてゆける」と安心した、という話を長ずるに及んで繰り返し繰り返し聞かされました。その母も89歳の長寿をまっとうしました。

“A Butterbur Umbrella”

It was one day just after I entered into an elementary school. The rain which started falling at lunch time was coming down earnest when the time to leave school. Mothers and fathers who came to meet their children holding umbrellas, rain shoes and rain coats gathered around a shoe cupboard. My mother was busy with her job at that time. After several hours, she ran with short steps to a school holding a small umbrella. On her way, she came across me who walked under a butterbur umbrella. She told me again and again, “I felt easy that you could live by yourself even if I died at early age.” She lived out her alloted span of life at the age of 89 years-old.

「ユア・チーティン・ハート」

日本中どんな街にも存在した通商「親不孝通り」です。たそがれ時になると、つい彷徨い歩きたくなるます。絵のタイトルはハンク・ウィリアムスの昔の名曲です。浮気な妻に嘆く男の哀れな歌詞です。画中の人物は彼から去ってしまった女性を尋ね歩きつつ、哀愁に満ちたブロークン・ラブ・ソングを歌っているのかもしれません。白いスーツにテンガロン・ハット姿は60年代の学生ﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞ「カントリー・レンジャース」のステージ衣裳です。

“Your Cheatin’ Heart”

It is commonly called “Oyafuko (impiety) Street” which exists in any town all over Japan. In twilight, I feel like wandering from place to place in these streets. The title of this painting is an old famous song by Hank Williams. The lyric of this song is about a sorrowful man who is grieving over his unfaithful wife. The man in my picture may be singing a broken heart love song, full of sorrow wandering from place to place to find the woman who has gone away from him. A white suit with a ten-gallon hat was the stage costume of “The COuntry Rangers” which was a band in my university in the 1960’s.

「棚田の春」

少年の頃、唐津では休田に菜の花、れんげ草が植えられてました。春には田園がすっかり黄色と紫色のツートン・カラーに変化する風景がいまでも夢の世界のようです。呼子に至る「うわば」には現在でも棚田が残っているそうです。いつか春に訪れてみたいと思っています。

“Terraced Paddy Fields in Spring”

When I was a young boy, in Karatsu, rape blossoms and Chinese milk vetches were planted in the fields during the off-season of the rice-planting. In spring, the fields completely changed into two-tone coloring of yelllow and purple which looks like a dream world for me even now. I heard that terraced paddy fields still remain in “Uwaba” on the way from Karatsu to Yobuko. I want to visit there in spring someday.

僕は歴史が好きです。歴史上の出来事・事件を今後はシリーズ化しようと思います。①は2.26です。1936年2月26日払暁。安藤大尉に率いられた下士官・兵達が出発した歩兵第3連隊の跡地は東京ミッドタウンとして変貌を遂げましたが、1979年に僕がTAMT Co., Ltd.を開業したのもその辺りで、そのビルの１Fはカフェでした。僕にとっては今でも特別の場所です。1970年代にドキュメンタリーTV番組制作塔で多くの記録フィルムを取材しました。仕事を通じて知った事、映像を通じて観たもの、感じたものをこれからも描いてゆくつもりです。僕の個人的なヒストリーです。

“History In Space-Time Part 1″

I like history. It is my intention to paint a series of happenings and cases in history hereinafter. Part 1 is “2.26″. At dawn on 26th February 1936, non-comissioned officers and solders of the 3rd infantry regiment were commanded by Captain Ando and started their position. The site of this position was metamorphosed into Tokyo Midtown. The place where I started TAMT Co., Ltd. in 1979 was around there, and on the 1st floor at this building was Cafe. I collected many documentary films for TV programmes in the 1970’s. I will paint what I came to know through my works, what I saw and felt through these films. This is my personal history.

「桜の宴」

「ゑびす堂」をオープンしてから花見ができません。いつか友人達に囲まれてこんな「宴」をしたいと思います。そんな「なんとなく」という気分で描き始めたので、結局苦労しました。画中の人物は「ゑびす堂」を訪れる人々、料理は「ゑびす堂通信・07年1月号」でレシピを紹介した「成吉思汁風鶏手羽煮」。それに「クスクス」と「ニース風サラダ」です。

“A Party Under Cherry Blossoms”

After opening “Ebisu-dou”, I do not have time to go to see cherry blossoms. One day, I would like to hold a party under the cherry blossoms surrounded by my friends. I started painting this subject with such a feeling, “for some reason or other”, I had a hard time starting to paint it. When my hand holding paint-brush stopped completely at the time of composing the background, the words “All Sorts of Flowers” burst upon me and everything was settled. Finally this painting was completed. The figures in this painting are characters who have visited “Ebisu-dou”. The dishes are Mongolian style stewed chicken wings which recipe was introduced in “Ebisu-dou News January 2007″, Couscous and salad Nicoise.

「翔び猪」

2007年の干支に因んで猪さんを描いてみました。近年は彼等の住処が開発の為狭くなり、冬になると里に降りて来ては捕獲されたり射殺されたりするニュースを見ると心が痛みます。21世紀には環境問題がもっと論議され、人と自然との共存が研究され、のびのびと楽しく生きる猪さんと逢いたいものです。この「翔び猪」はそんな願いを込めて描きました。

“Flying Wild Boar”

I painted it because 2007 is year of the Boar. Recently, places where wild boars are living are diminishing because of building developments. It pains me to see on the TV news that they came down to the village in winter and were caught or shot and killed. I hope, in 21st century, enviromental problems will be discussed more and more, and that people will study in order that human beings and nature can live together, and I can see wild boars that feel relaxed and live happily. I drew this “Flying Wild Boar” with such a wish.

「坂道のバー」

渋谷の「麗郷」の辺りから円山町に向かっての狭い坂道には、かって小さな「飲み屋」が並んでいました。その一軒、最早店名は忘れて仕舞いましたが、70年代当時の僕より少し年上の元学生運動家らさひき女性がやっているカウンターだけの小さなバーがあり、時々一人で寄ったものです。カウンターの中にギターが置いてあって、ある夜ウィスキー・ソーダを啜りつつ「何か弾いてよ」と言ったら、その人は二コリともせず黙ってギターをとって中島みゆきさんの「別れうた」を歌ってくれました。全共闘世代として様々な蹉跌が想い出されつつ、静かに渋谷の夜が更けてゆくのでした。まるでアートシアターギルドのモノクロのアングラ映画のワンシーンのようで、とても印象に残っています。

“The Bar at the Middle of the Slope”

There used to be small bars at the slope from around “Reykyo” to Maruyama-cho in Shibuya.Though I have forgotten the name, there was a small bar which had only the counter. A lady who seemd to be a student activist was a little bit older than I at the time in the 70’s, ran this bar. I sometimes went there alone. There was a guitar over the counter. One night, I asked her sipping a whisky and soda to play something. She grabbed the guitar without smiling and sang “Farewell Song” by Miyuki Nakajima. The song reminded me of this time of change, student demonstrations, the war in Vitnam and of my hope for a better world. It looked like one scene from a B&W undergroung film of Art Theater Guild which still remains in my heart deeply.
